Claude met Paul Bowles in 1973 at a Tangier dinner party, which was also attended by Tennessee Williams (American playwright) and Claudio Bravo (a Chilean painter) and remained as one of Paul's best friends until he died, in 1999. Claude began by translating Mohammed Mrabet's 'M'Hashish' (City Lights, 1969) into French, and then went on to translate many of Paul Bowles's own writings as well. Bowles's works in France became popular in the 1980's after Black Sparrow Press published a lot of his earlier works. 'Too Far from Home', 'The Spider's House' and 'Up above the World', most of the stories from 'Midnight Mass' and 'Things Gone and Things Still Here' are all titles that Claude Nathalie Thomas has translated into French, along with a lot of the stories of Jane Bowles. Claude Nathalie Thomas was a very good friend of Paul Bowles for over 25 years. She gave the address in French at the Paul Bowles Memorial Evening in Tangier on February 14th, 2000.
