Orphaned
Street Children in Tangier

What we are
doing here at The International Paul Bowles Society, with respect to
helping those in need, is nothing new in itself. People have been
helping the needy during their visits and travels overseas for many
years. What The International Paul Bowles Society does with regards to
this work is done as a direct part of our Memorandum.

As an example
of this, we don't just buy a bowl of harira (Moroccan soup) for one
child on the street. We ask him to go and get all of his friends and
fill the restaurant tables outside. There are some sidewalk restaurants
that allow us to do this, but not all do, for obvious reasons.

In the winter
time, we give warm socks to all of these children.
It gets really cold in Tangier in the winter.

In the summer we buy sandals for the orphans that are
barefoot, along with other items of need. Some of the kids ask for pens
('Stylos'), and we buy these in bulk.
We hug these kids and befriend them. We let them know that we care. We
know most of their names: Aziz, Said, Abdelmajid, Mubarek, Sadiyah,
Haban, Yassin, Madridy, Abdelrahim, Moura...the list goes on.
Most
of these children have never had or known a Mother's love, or known any
kind of family environment. They are family only in regards to each
other; the older ones tend to look out for the smaller ones. |

We don't expect or accept any personal compliments for doing things
like this. We are humble in our approach. We explain to local people,
when we are asked or complimented, who we are and why we do this work
(a lot of people in Morocco have already heard about Paul and Jane
Bowles) and thus we seek to honor the memory of Paul and Jane Bowles in
this way.
