Family
in Rabat
Welcome to this family in Rabat, who have
agreed to be on this web page. We were reluctant to ask Larby, but he
told us to 'get more people like you over here, we love ya.' That's
what he said, in his fluent US English. He speaks 1950's 'Roy Rogers
and Trigger' 'Philly' American - it's very funny to listen to Laraby!
Laraby and his family live on a very small US pension, from his service
to the US Army in Casablanca in the 1950's.
The founders of The International Paul Bowles Society have been friends
with, and helped this Moroccan family since 1979. They live in Rabat,
the capital of Morocco. The parents and four children live and sleep in
one room, which measures about 12 foot by 9 foot. There is one outside
loo, which serves a total of 5 families, who all live in a shared
courtyard, with very little privacy.

The photo above was taken in 1979. It shows Laraby, with our son,
Simon, then aged 6, and Laraby's daughter, Lubna, then aged 4, with his
wife, Jumma in the background. The photo (right) was taken in October
1999 - exactly 20 years later. Laraby is on the left, Jumma is on the
right, the little girl, Lubna is the pretty girl in the middle, then
aged 24, David Farmer is the good looking American guy at the back :-)
and the lad at the front is the same little blonde kid in the top
photo, our son Simon, at age 26.
Laraby
and his wife also have twin sons, Hassan and Hussein, who were born in
1987

This is just
one of the families that we continue to help. We buy clothing and
supplies for them, every time we see them. They open their home and
their hearts to us in the true tradition of Moroccan hospitality, every
time that we visit with them. This family has genuine love in their
lives, and it is our priviledge to know and help them, whenever we see
them. In that respect, they give us more than we give them. We give
them some, yet they give us all.
