Our Work with Families and People in Morocco

As well as promoting the work of Paul and Jane Bowles, The International Paul Bowles Society is committed to helping families and people in need in Morocco. Some of our members go out to Morocco quite regularly, at their own personal expense.

The International Paul Bowles Society helps families with children, infirm persons and orphans. Morocco is a poor country by comparison to the way that we know life in the west, and has very high unemployment with no social security.

On the Petit Socco in Tangier

Over the years, many visitors and tourists to Morocco have helped, and continue to help, people in need, by free and spontaneous giving, during their holiday trips. This has come to be known as just one element of what is known as 'responsible tourism.' Ever since the advent of the popularity of independent travel and tourism, visitors to Morocco, and other countries, have helped out whenever they could. This principle applies to many countries, and not just Morocco. How fortunate we are, to be able to fly to places like Morocco, and help the people who live there.

What we are doing here at The International Paul Bowles Society, with respect to helping those in need, is nothing new in itself. People have been helping the needy during their visits and travels overseas for many years.

Paul Bowles lived in Tangier, his chosen domicile residence, for over fifty years. He chose Morocco over all other places on the planet to live and write his books. Paul Bowles did not believe that 'civilization' is better than or preferable to 'primitiveness' and that's why he disliked western life with it's overtly materialistic and competitive values and so chose to live in Morocco.

As dedicated students, researchers and enthusiasts of the work of Paul Bowles we want to put something into Morocco, something that he might be proud of. Paul Bowles, through his personal realism, his stories, novels and his love of the music of Morocco, gave to each of us a different momento and a glimpse of himself, whether we knew him in real life or not.

We do this work in remembrance of Paul and Jane Bowles, and we think that they would be pleased with our genuine efforts. They are gone now, but they will not be forgotten. Their works still live on. People who like Paul and Jane Bowles are now collectively doing something for people in need in Morocco, and that is good.

We have been doing this work voluntarily and completely out of our own resources for over 20 years. We tell this so that people will know that this is not some new or invented idea. We do not seek to blow a trumpet on the cause of good works. We only seek to preserve the integrity and honour of the families that we seek to be friends with and help and we try to put these words correctly. If we fail, then please bear with us. It's not easy to word pages like this, inviting people to help families in Morocco, whilst always seeking to preserve the honour of families concerned, but we try our best to do so. Thank you for reading about our work in Morocco.
