About this book

This is a two page prose poem, written while Bowles was in the Class of 1928 at Jamaica High School, Long Island, New York. Bowles contributed regularly to the school's literary magazine 'The Oracle.' It was during the month of November 1928 that he wrote the prose poem 'No Eye Looked Out From Any Crevice.' This poem was rejected for the Magazine by a member of staff, maybe because of the violent content, and was lost until the mid 1990's when it was discovered by a Mid-West rare book dealer who sold it to a California book collector, Don Klein who then sought authenticity verification. Jeffrey Miller verified the piece and with the approval of Bowles, the small leaflet was published in 1997 by Cadmus Editions. Don Klein lives in San Francisco and is a major Bowles collector. He has a holograph version of this item, signed and inscribed by Paul Bowles.

Paul Bowles said at the time, 'I have no objection to the publication of the piece, although after so much time I don't know the meaning of it. I suppose that is unimportant, since it was written in my Surrealist period.'
