About The International Paul Bowles Society

Thank you for taking the time to visit and see what The International Paul Bowles Society is about.

The International Paul Bowles Society started in May 2000 (seven months after Paul's passing) through seeing the need for a forum for people to come together to share their interest in the works of Paul Bowles and we have been actively promoting the works of Paul and Jane Bowles ever since then. Such a forum had not previously existed and there was a vacuum that required a response from dedicated people who desired to create this forum - The International Paul Bowles Society.

In October 2000 we received the good wishes from the late Joseph A.McPhillips III, the Executor of the Estate of Paul Bowles, and also Paul's longtime friend since the 1960's as well as best wishes from some of Paul's literary and musical friends (including Phillip Ramey in Agadir, September 2006 - Phillip Ramey is an accomplished musician and was Paul Bowles's closest musical friend for many years. He features quite prominently with Paul Bowles in the film 'Night Waltz'), Abdelaziz Jadir - Paul's trusted Moroccan author friend and people from around the world who like Paul and Jane Bowles. We assist thousands of people worldwide with questions and enquiries about Paul and Jane Bowles and their works.

The International Paul Bowles Society is a non-profit organisation based in England. We are not affiliated with any external group, organisation, web site or the Estate of Paul Bowles.

Our work has increased over the past few years to include helping people in need in Morocco, a work which we do in memory of Paul and Jane Bowles. We are very proud of the work that we do in Morocco in helping people in need and the overall work of the Society in general.

Individuals' names and occasional photographs on this website are displayed in recognition of the research work, book reviews and other content that contributes to promoting the life and work of Paul and Jane Bowles.

Our site is online with genuine motives for promoting the works of Paul and Jane Bowles in the written, musical and theatre forms and working with caring attitude towards helping people in need in Morocco. This is what we are about, and this is what we do.

Our Objectives

Our objectives are to provide information and to promote the works of Paul Bowles and Jane Bowles in their written, musical and theatrical forms to interested parties throughout the world and to provide information on, increase the public awareness of, and assist in improving the living conditions of the poorer inhabitants of Morocco.

How our Objectives are achieved

We achieve these objectives in a variety of ways; via information on our website, International Paul Bowles Society Conventions, cultural 'Sheltering Sky' trips to Morocco and other activities that we organise from time to time, also by some of our members going out to Morocco (which is totally voluntary and also at the member's own expense) to find, communicate, and dispense supplies of food, clothing, spectacles, small household items and other useful things to people in need.

How our Objectives are funded

Our objectives are funded mostly through donations and gifts. We accept donations of, gifts, property and subscriptions, among other things; such as offering new videos, new and used music scores and other original material for sale. Please let us know if you are looking for anything in particular. (Please excuse us if a reply may take a while as we are sometimes in Morocco.)

We also receive small commission amounts from sales that are generated at amazon, through links on this website. All sales commission received is used directly to further the work of The Society in Morocco (please see below) and not for any individual. Please consider to buy your
new books and music on CD via our amazon links on this website.

Helping out in Morocco - 'The Sheltering Sky'

When we started the International Paul Bowles Society we did so only to promote the works of Paul and Jane Bowles. Several months later, and the founders naturally helping people in need in Morocco anyway, and had been doing so for many years, we realized that we could combine these two aspects together: of promoting the works of Paul and Jane Bowles and helping people in Morocco, and by doing so, might honor the memory of Paul Bowles in this way with our efforts. We were enthusiastic at the possibilities of being able to do even more towards helping people in Morocco, by extending our work in this way. Helping people in Morocco is an integral part of our work and more of our younger members are now involved with making the trips to Morocco to do this work. We promote the work that we do in Morocco on an even par with what we recommend and promote the works of Paul and Jane Bowles - for us, the two are inseparable. This was not always so from the beginning when we started out, but has become so, as a natural progression, over time. Please see our web pages to read more information about this work.

'Sheltering Sky' Holiday Trips to Morocco

We have 'Sheltering Sky' holiday trips in Morocco. These trips are usually held every year and are only offered to Members of The International Paul Bowles Society. Every place on each trip is usually taken at least nine months in advance, with priority given to Members who have not previously participated. We see the local sights and places of interest in each location that we visit, read Paul Bowles books together out loud each evening, listen to some of his music and help impoverished families during the daytime.

Archive Material

The International Paul Bowles Society maintains an archive of Paul and Jane Bowles material of letters, postcards, manuscripts, photographs, music scores and original music. If you have any material that you would like to donate to the Society, then these items would have a permanent home and be very warmly received by us. We sometimes publish interesting information from the letters of Paul Bowles, both on this website and in our printed publications. Please send your kind donation to us at the address below. Thank you.

Contributions for Publication

We sometimes receive requests from authors, publishers and networks for possible contributors to forthcoming publications or broadcasts. We are able to make recommendations for possible contributors for future media releases. Please contact us with full details of your publication if you would like to send us a copy, or your future publication, or have possible names of people who are able to contribute to your cause. We will then ask the person/s concerned who may then contact you directly.
